Drone Mapping, Newcastle

The whole site, mapped.

Factum Aerial produces orthomosaic maps, elevation models and 3D models of sites, land and assets across Newcastle and the Hunter. The outputs are made for planning, monitoring and visual measurement.

Overview

Maps and models, built from the air.

Factum Aerial maps sites, land and assets with a remotely piloted aircraft. We fly a planned grid over the area and capture a series of overlapping, georeferenced images. Those images are processed into a single orthomosaic map, a digital elevation model and, where required, a 3D model of the site.

A current orthomosaic shows the whole site in one scaled image, with distances and areas taken directly from the map. Repeat flights from the same plan record how the site changes over time.

Uses

What we map.

Site planning

An orthomosaic of a site as it stands today, for layout, access and early design work.

Earthworks monitoring

Repeat flights record the progress of earthworks across a project, with each map dated and scaled.

Rural and acreage

Whole-property maps of rural land and acreage, showing fences, tracks, dams, sheds and vegetation in one scaled image.

Environmental and vegetation monitoring

Repeat mapping of the same area records vegetation cover, erosion, waterways and change over time, each flight dated and comparable with the last.

Development sites

A current map and model of a development site before works, during construction and at completion.

Asset records

A dated, georeferenced record of yards, facilities, plant and infrastructure, held as a map and, where required, a 3D model.

Deliverables

What you receive.

Image and video quality, resolution, formats and outputs are discussed and agreed for each job.

  • Georeferenced orthomosaic map, delivered as GeoTIFF and JPEG
  • Digital elevation model of the mapped area
  • 3D model of the site, where required
  • Measurements of distance and area, where requested
  • Exports in common formats for GIS, CAD and design software
  • The raw image set, on request

Process

How a mapping job runs.

01

Scope

A short conversation covers the area, the outputs required and the accuracy needed. We quote the job and confirm a flight window. We respond to every enquiry within one business day.

02

Plan

We prepare a flight plan for the area. Flights are planned around the site, the airspace and the weather.

03

Fly

The aircraft flies the planned grid at a consistent height and captures overlapping images across the whole area.

04

Process and deliver

The images are processed into the orthomosaic, elevation model and 3D model. Files are delivered in common formats.

Limits

What the outputs are, and are not.

Factum Aerial mapping outputs are for planning, monitoring and visual measurement. They are not a cadastral or registered survey. Accuracy depends on the terrain and the conditions on the day.

Common questions

Mapping & Orthomosaics, answered.

How accurate are the maps?
Accuracy depends on the terrain, the conditions on the day and the method used. The accuracy needed is covered in the scoping conversation and reflected in the quote.
What formats are the files delivered in?
The orthomosaic is delivered as a GeoTIFF and a JPEG. Elevation models and 3D models are provided in common formats that open in GIS, CAD and design software.
Can the same site be mapped again later?
Yes. We keep the flight plan so the site can be flown again from the same parameters. Each flight produces a new dated map that can be compared with the last.
How accurate is a drone survey?
Accuracy depends on the flight height, the image overlap, the ground control used and the conditions on the day, and it is stated with each deliverable. The outputs are made for planning, monitoring and visual measurement. They are not a cadastral or registered survey, which only a registered surveyor can provide.
